Dress The Piries!

In our essential skills class we were asked to come up with an idea of halloween costumes for Donald, his wife & his son. My team won! We chose the Nightmare Before Christmas! Donald being Jack Skellington, his wife being Sally & his son Oscar being Zero the dog! We decided we would homemake the dog costume with a simple bedsheet!

The History of Media Makeup

Except for professional male actors and models you would think that make-up has always been used by women, but throughout history, before the twentieth century, make-up was worn primarily by men.
Paintings from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, George Washington and his contemporaries wore white powdered wigs with curls on the side and a pony tail in back, as well as white powder on their faces and red rouge on their cheeks and lips. European royalty including King Louis the fourteenth of France and King George the third of England set the fashion. After smallpox swept through Europe and left many people with pox marks, the French elite covered these scars by painting large, black beauty marks over them. Some even painted the symbols of hearts, clubs, spades and diamonds in red or black over the scars, as playing cards was the main social event in the evenings. This was considered extremely fashionable at the time as electricity had not yet been invented, so there was no television or radio to provide entertainment on long, dark evenings. This was the practice of the wealthy who had time on their hands to adorn themselves

It was discovered that with the powerful lights they used at that time, the actors looked washed out and drab. Therefore, make-up had to be created for male and female actors to even out the skin tone, add color, enhance features and create drama. And then like now the general public idolized movie stars and wanted to emulate them. This created a retail need for cosmetics and the beginning of what is today one of the largest earning sectors in market history. Women are continually fascinated by cosmetics and the promise they hold and can't seem to get enough of them.

Pale skin indicated people who worked inside in offices or factories whereas, a suntan showed you were wealthy enough to vacation and jet set for most of the year. Of course when it was discovered that excessive exposure to the sun caused premature aging and skin cancer, the dark tan look faded from popularity

The earliest known use of theatrical makeup was by the Greek actor Thespis, who, in an effort to stand out from the Greek chorus, painted a toxic covering of white lead and mercuric sulphide to create a white and red face paint.

Before 1850, materials (some of them hazardous) used for stage make-up included burnt cork to blacken the face; artist's pigments such as carmine, vermilion and red lead for lips and cheeks; lampblack for mascara; India ink to create wrinkles and folds; and white lead, flour and powdered pearls to whiten the face. Butter was used to remove the make-up.

I think no makeup user should be without a good moisturiser! I use Simple moisturiser and I love it as it keeps your skin from going dry and helps makeup application easier. It keeps your face fresh and healthy. and helps soften the skin.

'Our Hydrating Light Moisturiser is a perfect blend of ingredients to help keep your skin replenished and hydrated. Perfect for even sensitive skin.'

Reviews-

'I have used this product every single day for over 10 years! This does mean my review is a little one sided as I cannot compare it to other like products as I have never had a reason to change'

'This moisturizer is great. I have very dry skin, and most moisturizers just dry my skin out even more. This product gives my skin a GREAT moisture balance, I would recommend it to anyone and I will definitely buy again!'

"Absolutely gorgeous variety of neutrals, shimmer/sheen/matte (wish they had more of)
The Naked 2 can go a long way from a natural look to an amazing smokey eye for a night out.
Very universal."

"For months I have used only this palette, and nothing else, it has all you need for a neutral to smokey eyes look, absolutely love it. Cant live without it."

"I love this product, the colours are brilliant, and I use all of them, something which rarely happens with a palette."

Top 3 uses of wigs in films i love!

1. Hairspray - All wigs in this movie are similar and are styled in retro updos to give it the old fashioned 60s look.

2. The Grinch - I love the wigs in this film as they are all very different and unusual like the character Cindy Lou. The wigs are wired to shape.

3.Napolean Dynamite - Napolean is the quirky main character in this film. He wears a curly wig to show that he is a teenager who is not very popular and quite geeky.

Top 5 examples of makeup in films I love!

1. Edward Scissorhands - I love how the makeup & hair is very dramatic and SFX is used for the scars on his face. The Makeup artist for the film is Ve Neill who has also worked on Beetlejuice, Mrs Doubtfire & Pirates of the Caribbean.

2. Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland - I love the makeup in this film as it is very over the top & dramatic and I love that Valli O'reilly the MUA keeps Alice's look very plain & simple to show that she is not like the other chracters as bright & bold colours are used on them.

3. Black Swan - The MUA for this film is Judy Chin. She does a massive makeup transformation on Natalie Portman from the innocent white swan to the edgy black swan. Using dark colours & red contacts to emphasise the danger in the eyes.

 4. X Men - Rick Baker is the SFX MUA for this film. The character Mystique is head to toe in full blue paint & scales to make her look more like an alien. I love this as its full body paint so you would need to make sure everywhere is covered.

5.Hellboy - The makeup used for the character in this film was all foam prosthetic pieces, including his pecs, a skull cap, and full-facial prosthetic that covered everything except his lower lip. The MUA for this film was Jake Garber who was also MUA in Hellboy 2.

Wet set curl!

In our hairdressing class we took sections of the hair & wet them with water before adding in rollers to the whole head. We then set the hair by sitting it under a dryer for 20 minutes then removed the rollers & ended up with lovely curls!
